I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t always enjoyed books by Robin Parrish.  “Nightmare” and “Offworld” were probably my two favorites, but they were both still hard for me to get through.  I’ve always thought that I enjoyed edgier, sci-fi type novels, but I never could quite get a feel for his writing.  When this book came up as being available to review, I thought I would give him another try.  I’ll say right now, I’m glad that I did.

John Luther has risen to the top as the leader of one of the country’s premiere religious organizations.  If he’ll just lend his support behind a new sweeping religious freedoms act, he and his organization should be in a great position to reap some huge financial gains.  That is IF he’ll lend his support.  And if he doesn’t, he stands to put his life and those around him into grave danger.  As John stops to assist a young teenager on the way home, the unthinkable happens.  Waking up, the young lady is dead and his life has been turned upside down.  The police have all the information to arrest him for her murder, but John is on the run in an attempt to clear his name.  Is anywhere safe for John to hide?  Will anyone believe his story and offer to help him? Who is behind this obvious setup and what is their motive? Run as fast as you can, and go BUY THIS BOOK!

This book is a novelization of an upcoming movie to be released towards the middle of July.  When I see that there is a novelization, I always wonder the whole “which came first, the chicken of the egg”.  With this book, I didn’t really care.  As I read through this book, I could envision it being made into a terrific movie.  The plot lines were so pertinent to today’s affairs, from the political atmosphere we live in to the religious persecution that seems to creep in ever closer here in America.  The characters are flawed but flawed to the point that only because of their past can they be successful in the present.  This type of writing, to me, is what epitomizes a great author.  Someone that can take everyday actionable events and turn them into a white-knuckle novel.

Is this a "guy's book"?  This is truly a guy’s book, but I know some women who would like it too.  There isn’t any hint of romance in this book, as almost from the beginning you are catapulted into the action of a man on the run trying to save everything he has.  The chase scenes, the plot twists and the intrigue all combine to make this a must read by any man that I know.

Critical Condition by Dr. Richard Mabry

It began as a quiet dinner party honoring Dr. Shannon Frasier's colleague, but became a nightmare when a man was shot on her lawn, reviving emotions from a similar episode a decade ago. Then a midnight call from her sister, Megan, causes Shannon to fear that her sister is on drugs again.

Her "almost-fiance" Dr. Mark Gilbert's support only adds to Shannon's feelings of guilt, since she can't bring herself to fully commit to him. She turns for help to her pastor-father, only to learn that he's just been diagnosed with leukemia.

Shannon thought it couldn't get any worse. Then the late-night, threatening phone calls begin, the rough voice asking, "What did he say before he died?"

I’m thinking that Dr. Mabry is definitely one of my favorite writers of Medical Suspense.  My other favorite in that category has got to be Dr. Harry Kraus.  How glad I am that it appears their publishing schedule is opposite of each other so that I can always count on great books all throughout the year.

Years after watching her fiancé die from a gunshot wound, Dr. Shannon Frasier has completed all of her medical training and continues to hold fast to her promise from that night to spend the rest of her life fighting against death…. And winning.  Now, as a man lays dying on her front lawn from a gunshot wound, her thoughts go back to that night and the desperation she felt by not being able to save a life.  Matters get complicated when her sister, Megan, leaves her boyfriend and asks to crash with Shannon for awhile.  Always the “fixer”, Shannon agrees.  As the investigation into the dying man continues, though, her sister is pulled further and further into looking like the main suspect.  Turning to her pastor father for strength, she finds that he’s been diagnosed with Leukemia and is in the midst of a battle himself.  As her life seems to be spiraling out of control, a series of threatening phone calls cranks the danger to her life even higher.  Who was the man on her lawn and what was his connection to her sister?  What’s the prognosis for her father’s illness?  Who’s behind the phone calls and what do they want?  Hang up the phone and go down to BUY THIS BOOK!!!

Dr. Mabry has once again written a novel that provides everything you could ask for in a great novel.  He has provided us with meaningful characters, a believable storyline and a plot that flows like a smooth river.  The descriptions of places and actions throughout the book always invoke clear vivid pictures of everything that is happening, adding to the realism and immersion of the storyline.  The end is wrapped up tight, allowing you to heave a huge sigh of relief that all of the suspense and turmoil has finally come to a dramatic end.  Of course, that’s only until the next book come out.

 

Is this a "guy's book"?  This book has all of the markings of a great “guy’s book”.  The suspense and intrigue start small and continue to a full crescendo until you’re almost breathing from all of the action.  To me, there’s nothing like a great action-packed “whodunit” to brighten your day.

It’s funny sometimes how books find their way to me.  This book was one that I received from the author because she stole my question during an author chat that we were both attending.  I told her since she stole my question, that she owed me her newest book.  About a week later, “The Road to Testament” was in my mailbox and I was on my way to reading, and now reviewing, this book.

Unlike most people her age, Ashlynne has her life all planned out.  Working for her family magazine, she knows that as soon as her Grandmother retires, that he father will take over and she will move into his role.  A position that she feels is just hers for the taking.  When her Grandmother announces her retirement, Ashlynne finds out that her father won’t let her take over his role until she moves up to North Carolina to a newspaper owned by friends of her Grandmother’s and makes some changes in her life.  Assured that six months will pass before she knows it, she heads up to fulfill her obligation to her father.  Never having been out of Florida, she isn’t quite prepared for what life is like in a small town in North Carolina.  As she digs up secrets that have been buried for years, she also digs up feelings for her new boss that she hasn’t felt in a long time, if ever.  Can she make it through 6 months so that she can get her position back in Florida? Why is her new boss so mean to her and why can’t she stop thinking about him? What kind of secrets does she uncover and will this small town ever be the same again after everything is aired? Wait till halftime of the football/basketball game and then go BUY THIS BOOK!

So as I sit here and think about this book and whether or not I liked it, I’m really perplexed.  This book was what I consider a very solid read.  There weren’t any plot twists or turns that came out of left field.  The story line flowed from beginning to end with great character formation and brilliant descriptions of locations.  I could picture this book being made into a movie, a great Hallmark Channel movie that you sit down with the family on a Sunday night and watch.  At the same time, there wasn’t anything that really stood out that made this book exciting.  I appreciate the strength of the writing and the way everything fell into place, but there were times I would have liked to see something explode or somebody get gunned down, but that’s the “guy” side of me talking.

Is this a "guy's book"?  Not in the sense of suspense and intrigue, but definitely because it is a great book.  There’s nothing overtly romantic about this book, even though there is romance involved.  This is a contemporary novel about second chances and redemption and being able to take a different look at what makes you happy in your world.  There isn’t very much suspense, but there is a great side story about some uncovered graves and who they might belong to that makes this book one that would be enjoyed by anyone.

I was born and reared just outside of Savannah, Georgia. Yeah, I have a southern accent. It gets a little more southern every time I cross the Florida/Georgia state line.

If I had all the time in the world, I'd probably lie on the sofa all day and watch old movies. I usually have to get sick for something even close to that happening.

I can quote entirely too many lines from Pretty Woman (You do? You think I've got potential?). In fact, I quote lines from movies and songs so often that most people are unaware of what I'm doing. I may or may not have offended some folks. If I have...I'm sorry.

I'm an ex-nurse and a seminary graduate. I hated nursing but love God with a passion and can hardly get through a conversation without talking about our relationship! I think the Old Testament is totally FUN to read (I mean, HOW much stuff can one clan of people get in to?) and the New Testament draws me closer to Heaven. Yeah!

I'm married even though my hubby had to have his wedding band cut off due to an infected spider bite. The nurse said either that or the finger would fall off. I was going for the second option, but was alone in that. :) Now he wears it on his right hand. I can live with that. We have kids and grandkids and two absolutely adorable dogs, Hope and Poodar.

The Turning by Davis Bunn

The message was unexpected but instantly recognizable. 

A voice resonated from a distance and somehow from within.  Against all earthly logic, it carried a divine command.  And five very different people knew they were summoned to obey.

When you read Brandilyn Collins, you expect suspense.  When you read Wanda Brunstetter, you expect sweet Amish stories.  The great thing about picking up a novel by Davis Bunn, is that you never know what you are going to get.

Are you ever still enough to “hear” God speak to you?  The five people in this story sure didn’t have any problem making a distinction between any still small voice in their head and the thundering voice of the Almighty.  But would they follow it?  By doing so, they have opened up a difference in their lives, they’ve taken a path that is leading them to something more than they could ever imagine.  By following this voice, they are allowing themselves to travel down a road that will require them to take a higher road between the moral right and the moral wrong.  Can their small band really go up against the powerhouse media conglomeration?  Are they putting all their lives in danger? Is there a way to stand for what you believe in in the face of the society that we have become today?  Turn off your TV and go BUY THIS BOOK!

The best part of this book, in my opinion, is the fact that it kept giving me a reason to read it.  I love to get close to the end of a chapter and get that nudge that “one more chapter will be enough for tonight”.  By the time you get to that “one more chapter”, you’re seeing the beginning of a new day and you’re finishing the book.  This book is that way.  Mr. Bunn takes you down this journey and continues to entice you to read more.  You can never get enough, and even at the end of it, you are hoping that there is more to be shared about the book.  It was fascinating to me how Mr. Bunn brought the characters together, almost in a way that said, “I need you to listen and help me, but before you do that, there’s some baggage in your life that we need to reconcile”.  The characters were everyday people from every day walks of life with every day sin in their lives and He was still able to use them to further His kingdom.

Is this a "guy's book"?  Hang onto your hat.  This is a simple read, but it is a read that keeps you going, always wanting to read just a little further and never giving you a rest until you’ve turned the final page.

Do you remember the time you picked up a book by an author that you hadn’t read?  The queasiness and unease that you felt?  Should you spend the money on the unknown author, or pick up the book by an author that you already know that you’ll enjoy the book?  Those were the feelings that I had after I requested this book.  Come with me and let’s peel the cover back together and find out if I made the right choice or not.

I will admit that this book was tough to get into and tough to follow.  The writing style of the author is more poetic and rhythmic than I’m normally used to reading.  The characters and descriptions provided are very detailed and specific.  This tends to bog down my enjoyment as sometimes I think authors can provide too much information as they are establishing their story.  The plot of “Thin Places” is a new one to me, so this book was interesting and not something that I have read before, so from that aspect this was new and kept me coming back for more.  The mystery and supernatural elements are pretty obvious, but the Christian element is left in the background.

Is this a "guy's book"?  This book does not provide you with all of the normal mind-blowing, car-chasing suspense novels that I normally review on here.  This is more of an allegory, but one that tells a great story if you can slow your pace down to fully enjoy what the author is trying to share with you.

So here’s a little known fact about me.  Many years ago, in a galaxy far, no wait, that’s not right.  Many years ago, I was introduced to my first Christian Fiction novel.  Up until then, my readings had consisted of Stephen King, Dean Koontz and John Saul, just to name a few.  I’ve been a Christian since my early child years and I’ve always had a book in my hand.  I never was quite satisfied, though, by what I was reading.  On that day, I had a book recommended to me called “The Chairman” by Harry Lee Kraus.  I couldn’t put it down, it embodied the essence of a great work of Fiction AND provided me with a clean, faith based novel.  I was hooked.  I have read nothing but Christian Fiction from that point and I’ve been thrilled since that time to read more and more by Harry Kraus. 

The business of medical breakthroughs in the Pharmaceutical world is cutthroat to say the least.  When Dr. Rebecca Jackson is visiting Africa on a PR tour for Jackson Pharmaceuticals, she’s kidnapped and taken to show the underbelly of what the test trials on their HIV drug has done.  She’s released when she promises to get her company to provide additional resources to all that were affected by the drug trials.  Noah Linebrink is at the edge of finalizing a new blood replacement.  No longer will patients need to rely on blood donations, his discovery will make that a thing of the past.  Noah’s boss wants Dr. Jackson on their side to finalize the product and he has sent Noah to win her over.  Their past, though, may not be one that would make a healthy partnership.  As Noah and Rebecca begin to work through their past and their current path, she finds out that she has a brain tumor.  Unexplainingly, though, she is also getting moments of clarity that is allowing her to work through the roadblocks on her project and push it closer to completion.  Will Rebecca remain well enough to complete the project?  Does Noah get her to agree to the partnership? Can they see through their past and agree to work towards a solution that will benefit so many people?  Don’t wait for the drug trials, go BUY THIS BOOK!

To me, the point that an author has written a book that has reached the level where I want to share it with everyone I see is when I get so caught up in the characters that I forget that they are just that, characters from somebody’s imagination.  The main characters in “Lip Reading” were two such characters.  I do not believe in ever physically striking a woman, but in the case of Rebecca, I thought she was ready for a good smack of realization.  The same can be said of Noah.  I didn’t like him at all, he seemed to be the type of individual who was going to hid behind his past and never move out its shadow for this rest of his life.  Boy was I wrong.  Harry has character development down to a science, in my opinion (and since this IS my review, I guess my opinion IS important).  The story was very easy to follow, the plot was driven along with intrigue and suspense, right up until the very end.

Is this a "guy's book"?  This is not an action-packed, blow everything up, military shoot’em up thriller.  This is, though, a very thought-provoking look at the pharmaceutical business and what’s at stake when they bring a new drug to production.  There is suspense a nice little mystery that is wrapped up tightly at the end.

My experience as a writer is far from typical. Having received my formal training in biology and chemistry and medicine, my only preparation for a writing career was a love for reading. The longest thing I'd written before my first novel was a term paper in undergraduate school. My first novel was accepted by Crossway Books and published in 1994, and it wasn't until after I had FOUR published novels that I even opened a book of instruction about the craft of writing fiction. This is not what I recommend to others! Yes, I was successful, but I was bending the "rules" without knowing it. I had a natural talent for plotting, but I realize my initial success may have stunted my growth as a writer. I'd have made faster progress if I'd have gone to the fiction teachers sooner. “The Chairman”, the first novel I wrote after actually studying what professional novelists teach, was a finalist for the Catherine Marshall Award for Excellence in Inspirational Fiction (A Christy Award) in the suspense category in 2000.  I have three sons: Joel, Evan, and Samuel. I received this book from the cashier when I paid money for it.  Nobody asked me to write this review, I just enjoyed the book so much that I wanted to do it so that you all will read the book!

This is the final book in a grouping that, while they aren’t my normal genre to read, I thought I would read in an attempt to broaden my reading lists.  So if you like to visit my page to get some insight into what men enjoy reading, hang onto your thoughts as some of these books may surprise even me.  This book is book 3 in the “Westward Winds” series by Amanda Cabot.  While it may be the 2nd in the series, this book can be read as a stand-alone, but I would recommend reading the first 2 in the series as some of the details may make more sense if you do that.

After some pushing and prodding by her sisters, Elizabeth Harding has agreed to come to Cheyenne and open up her medical office.  After hearing all of the virtues from her sisters, she is sure that as soon as she shows up she’ll have patients lining the streets waiting for her.  Jason Nordling, Attorney-At-Law, isn’t too keen on the idea of having a new doctor in town, much less a LADY doctor.  It’s beginning to look like no one in town will welcome her to town.  Is there room in the town for two doctors?  Will there be any patients that step up to her door or will she have to remove her shingle and come up with a new plan? Will there be more between her and Jason?  Great questions and you’ll know while you read this book in the waiting room after you BUY THIS BOOK!!

I’m trying to judge these books (no, not by their cover) by their content.  This story is well written, has great character development and provides enough description that it makes you feel as if you have been transported back in time.  I love that Elizabeth is written as a strong, independent woman, especially with this being set in the old west.  It was refreshing to see the part where Elizabeth was treating the ladies from the local brothel, it took me back to Bible and where it showed that Jesus would frequent.  I guess you can see true applications of the Bible even when reading Fiction.

Is this a "guy's book"?  I won’t kid you and say that it is.  Did I enjoy it?  Sure, but now that I’m opening my reading genre up a little, this wasn’t a hard stretch for me to enjoy it.  This is your regular “Girl Meets and Falls in love with Guy” book.  There is a little mystery and intrigue, more thrown in to keep the story arch going than it is to fall back on as part of the main plot, though.  A good clean straightforward romance novel if that’s what you are looking for.

About The Author

I agree with Thomas Jefferson when he said, "I cannot live without books." Some of my earliest memories are of my parents reading books to me or -- in the case of my father -- telling stories he made up. And even when they weren't reading to me, my parents could often be found, book in hand. Is it any wonder I decided to teach myself to read? Once I did learn, it was hard to find me without a book. My husband will tell you that that's still the case.

Along the way, I've had a chance to do a lot of writing, including four technical books and what I describe as "enough technical articles to cure insomnia in a medium-sized city." (My budgets were also considered to be works of fiction.) Now, though, I'm able to write full time, and for the first time, all I'm writing is fiction.

When people ask why I write, the answer is simple: it's part of who I am and who I was meant to be. I truly believe this is God's plan for me, and that's why it is my fervent prayer that my books will touch my readers' hearts and strengthen their faith in Him.
