So I’ve looked at this book for a long time and never could bring myself to sitting down and actually opening to the first page.  Why?  I don’t know, really.  It could be the cover, the content or just my procrastination gene kicking in.  In the end, I did sit down and open the book and I will admit, I didn’t get much sleep for the next couple of days.

What would you do if you were the only person that knew one of the biggest secrets of all time?  Would you tell somebody? Would it eat away at you every day? Would you take the secret to your grave?  Margaret Baker was faced with that very dilemma when she was in Dallas and filmed something on her camera.  Once the news spread about the assassination of President Kennedy, she thought back to her camera and what she may have caught while she was filming.  Once she had the film developed, she locked it away in a safe deposit box and never looked at it again.  Now Margaret has passed and her daughter, Sheila, finds out that not only did she inherit the house and belongings of her mother, she has also inherited this national treasure.  Knowing that there really isn’t anyone that she can trust, Sheila hunts down Jason Hammond and enlists his help.  After his initial disbelief, Jason quickly comes to her aid as Sheila’s life is put in danger.  Someone knows that the film exists and knows that she has it.  Will Sheila and Jason be able to stay a step ahead of those after them?  Is there someone that they can turn to with this lost secret?  What exactly does the film show?  Read the rest of my review and then run to your nearest Christian Bookstore and BUY THE BOOK!

This is not the first book by Wil Mara, but it is his first novel written as a Christian Fiction novel.  This novel does everything that I would hope for in a great book.  It provided me with entertainment, it embellished on something ‘factual’ to the point of making me do some research myself on that fateful day in Dallas and it left me satisfied and wanting more.  It was refreshing to see the main character as a flawed person that was able to return to his faith as the story progressed.  I was concerned at the end that there were going to be some big plot holes that were just glossed over (like how Jason could escape from the Coast Guard without facing persecution), but my concern was unfounded.

Is this a "guy's book"?  There is so much action and adventure in this book, there’s no way that this could not be considered a great “guy’s book”.  With the mix of the historical information provided about the assassination, everybody should pick up this book and dive right in.

I had a chance to ask Mr. Mara some questions and he was nice enough to spend a couple of minutes with us and give us his answers:

What is your favorite bible verse and why?

I love the verse from Luke 12:48 in the King James Bible—“For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required.” And I don’t think that should be strictly interpreted to mean people who were born wealthy or with an abundance of talent or natural intelligence or whatever. I always took it to mean that everyone has the potential to offer something special to the world—and once you find out what that something is, you have a responsibility to get out there and make use of it.

What has been the most important thing you hope your readers will get from your books and why?

I have several hopes in this regard. First and foremost, I pray that all readers simply enjoy the story. Fiction can service our lives in many ways, and one of the most important is to provide an enjoyable temporary respite from the rigors of daily living. No matter how wonderful your life may be, we all need a break from time to time. A good novel should furnish that opportunity. Second, I’m hoping readers will learn a little bit more about the Kennedy assassination—a few details that most people still don’t know about, the continuing impact those few seconds in Dallas had on the world, and so on. And third, it would be a source of great pride if readers could walk away from this first story about Jason Hammond and his faith-based struggles thinking a little bit more about their own challenges as Christians in a world that isn’t always as rewarding as we might like it to be.

Besides writing, what are some of your favorite hobbies? 

I spend a lot of time with my family and love every blessed moment. That’s first and foremost. I like to read quite a bit (it suppose it would be fairly ridiculous if I didn’t). I also enjoy cooking, although the things I cook aren’t always the healthiest. And I just took my first stab at gardening. Since nothing I planted this past spring has died yet, I’m finding it very satisfying.

What advice would you give to a beginning writer?

Practice your craft until you are absolutely certain your material is worth an editor’s time. Be brutally honest with your evaluations, no matter how much it hurts. Tom Clancy once said something along the lines of, “I became a good writer by being a bad one first.” That’s very useful advice. Above all else, stick with it. You’ll never publish anything if you quit, right?

Favorite memory from childhood?

I have so many that I wouldn’t know where to begin. I didn’t have the easiest childhood, but the happy memories I do have I cherish very much.

Favorite comfort food?

Anything that would be prepared in a smoker, e.g., ribs, brisket, pork shoulder, chicken thighs, etc. As I said earlier, I sometimes eat things I really shouldn’t. I’m actually fairly disciplined with my dietary practices. But if every food item in the world had the same nutritional impact, my personal menu would read like something from that show BBQ Pitmasters.

Wil Mara has been writing books since 1988.  He started with a manuscript about herpetology (a childhood hobby), which led to a job as an editor with TFH Publications, aka, “The World’s Largest Publisher of Animal Books”.  In the mid ‘90s, he left TFH to work for Harcourt-Brace, at which time he began his first foray into fiction, ghostwriting a title for Albert Whitman and Company’s popular “Boxcar Children Mysteries”.  By the time he did his fifth “Boxcar” in 1999, he was also editing for textbook publisher Prentice Hall.  In addition to “Frame 232”, Wil is the author of 2 other disaster thrillers.

An interview with Erin Healy,

Author of Afloat

We live in a world where a spiritual battle between good and evil is continually raging around us, whether we are aware of it or not. While supernatural fiction portraying the battle between light and darkness has become a popular genre in recent years, best-selling author Erin Healy hopes readers recognize a difference between her books and the others out there. “The secular paranormal genre is preoccupied with darkness. Q: How would you describe your latest book, Afloat?

Afloat is a supernatural-disaster survival story. An eclectic group of people stranded in a floating house grapple with the question of whether love can rise above self-preservation instincts.

Q: Is there a “moral to the story” in Afloat you hope readers will walk away with?

I hope they’ll have a renewed sense that for believers, death is nothing to fear; our survival is guaranteed. How we love each other, however, is entirely up to us.

Q: How did you get into writing supernatural suspense?

Ted Dekker is partly responsible for that. He invited me to write two books with him, Kiss and Burn, that contain supernatural elements. But the genre is a natural fit for me. I appreciate many stories that have supernatural elements, and I’m a person who believes the physical and spiritual parts of our lives are far less compartmentalized than we think they are.

Q: Because you write in such a unique genre, do you think it’s harder for you to come up with ideas than some other authors or does the supernatural element give you more ideas to play with?

I don’t believe I have more or fewer ideas to play with than any other writer, just different ideas, and different expectations to meet.

Q: Some readers feel really uncomfortable with the thought of reading supernatural fiction. Is there anything you would tell them to invite them over to what they would consider to be the dark side?

I respect their discomfort. There are certain genres that I’m not comfortable reading. But to those who are curious I would say that the supernatural world is real, it is biblical, it has a profound effect on our physical reality, and it is more bright than dark. I believe it’s no more terrifying than the physical world, because the same God rules over both. I write from a Christian worldview and make every effort to honor the Lord through my stories, to whatever degree they might be viewed as “supernatural” or “paranormal” or (as I think of them) “metaphorical” or just plain weird. So while I can’t speak for every supernatural story, there should be nothing to fear in mine.

Q: In your own experience, what causes a crisis to bring out the best character in some people and the worst in others?

I believe our behaviors are informed by our values. For example, in Afloat, one of my main characters values his authority and leadership, another values the lessons he’s learned from his past, another values the stability she’s able to provide for her son. None of these values is inherently bad. What makes the difference is whether a person holds his values to serve his own sense of security or others’. Extreme pressure proves the truth.

Q: What are some of the things give you a sense of security? Love in my home, locks on my doors, and money in the bank. That doesn’t sound very spiritual, does it? I also crave approval, accomplishment, and a clear sense of purpose. Again, none of these is bad, but I do notice that my trust in them (in the form of fear that they will fail me) rises to the surface when I feel threatened. In Afloat, the disaster strips most of the characters of everything they thought would keep them safe. Learning how to trust in the only lasting security of God’s perfect love is a lifelong spiritual journey.

Q: Is it possible to love another person without sacrificing something of yourself for him or her?

This is the question at the heart of my hero’s story in Afloat. Vance has experienced sacrificial love but is reluctant to accept or to give it. I do believe it’s hard to love another person well without sacrifice. Jesus Christ, of course, is the ultimate model of what this looks like. He gave up absolutely everything of worldly value to love us. He even gave up his supernatural identity as the Son of God. For me, the definition of true love is the ability to care about another person’s needs more than I care about my own.

Q: For some people, there are there times when they feel the need for certainty that God is real. Are there times when you live comfortably with doubt?

When life is painful, doubt is like a blister that puts a barrier between the wound and the world. The protective layer—maybe God isn’t real after all—is undesirable but normal and maybe even part of our healing process. In my experience, God has the greatest opportunity to reveal himself to us in the deepest valleys of life. Doubt is never comfortable for me, but I’m learning to value seasons of doubt as a chance to know God more fully.

Q: Do you believe the Bible condemns you for your mistakes or frees you to embrace God's love?

This question names a defining struggle of my life. In the beginning, Danielle (Afloat’s leading lady) reads condemnation and judgment into the message delivered to her. She can’t hear it as a message of love until it’s almost too late. I have read the Bible both ways, only lately discovering that the Word takes on whole new meaning—giving freedom, defeating fear, increasing joy—when read through the lenses of God’s love.

Q: Most authors include something of themselves in each book. What parts of you show up in Afloat?

I’m a totally fretful parent. You’ll see me in Danielle’s and Mirah’s parenting.

Q: Given Alfoat’s survival element, one would have to ask—are you much of an adventurist? How long would you make it away from civilization?

A friend once said that anything less than three stars is roughing it—I think that pretty much describes me. I like the kind of adventures that come with hot running water and clean socks. I like seeing new places, trying new things, eating new food, meeting new people… but you won’t ever find me in a Survivor lineup.

Q: If you were set afloat, what three items would you make sure were set adrift with you?

Tom Hanks, Wilson, and a copy of Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken, a great survival story that would remind me how to catch seagulls and sharks with my bare hands.

January Justice by Athol Dickson

Reeling from his wife's unsolved murder, Malcolm Cutter is just going through the motions as a chauffeur and bodyguard for Hollywood's rich and famous. I would have to guess, if it really ever matters, that this book will be hugely successful.  And what would I be basing that assumption on, you might ask?  Well, since my birthday is in January, and the title of this book has January in it, then it only seems correct to say that anything associated with January is going to be successful.  Now you follow my logic, don’t you?  I bet you wish now that you had something to do with January, don’t you.

Malcolm Cutter is a man that time has forgotten.  He’s lost his wife (ssshhh, don’t tell anyone that he was married) and he’s lost his memory of what happened that awful night.  He’s also lost months of his life as he tries to recover from that event.  We find out that Malcolm is a driver, of sorts, for various clients in Los Angeles.  One of those clients, Haley Lane, became more than just a client.  Haley wasn’t just another pretty face and great actress.  She was also had a great business sense and was very open about her charitable work.  Malcolm, on the other hand, was ex-military.  Ex, because he had been dismissed from the service and court-martialed for a highly publicized event that took place with his unit during a raid.  As their relationship grew, Malcolm did not want to see all of the hard work that Haley did get muddied with his past, so he begged her that their relationship never came out publicly.  So here we are, he’s back to driving, living in the guesthouse and trying to unravel the hazy memories from the night that Haley died.  Malcolm is made aware that the bulk of her fortune, estates, and assets has been left to him over his objections.  He takes a job driving some visitors around Los Angeles only to find out that they want him to look into a kidnapping and ransom that happened 7 years earlier.  As he is still hiding from his past, he only wants to get his life back together quietly and move on.  Before long, though, he sees that it isn’t possible to ignore this case.  With his trusty butler, Simon and his knowledgeable gardner, Teru, by his side, Malcolm delves into this new chapter in his life.  Will he find out the answers to the kidnapping and ransom?  Does his memory ever become clear on what happened to Haley?  What does he do with all of her stuff?  Did he really commit those atrocities overseas?  Questions, questions, questions!!!!  Just buy the book already and find out for yourself J

I will admit that I didn’t really like Malcolm at first.  I wasn’t real clear on what happened with his character and Haley, but as I read the book I began to understand that that was on purpose.  This is the first in a series of books, so I’m sure that as the books progress, so will his memory of that night.  He did tend to grow on me as I continued reading and the supporting characters, Simon and Teru, made the story line even more enjoyable.  There isn’t a very clear “Christian” theme in this book.  Malcolm does have some interaction about faith and talking to Jesus, but the theme throughout this book was more of a clean suspense/mystery novel.  I find it refreshing that someone can write a book with this type of action and intrigue and do it with no foul language or gratuitous sex scenes.  I would hope that this character continues to build off of the relationship that his wife had a searches for his own answers through Jesus.  The storyline is very smooth and believable.  There aren’t a lot of characters that would cause you to become confused or hard to follow.  The interaction that Mr. Dickson has between Malcolm and Simon and Teru is riveting at times.  They all seem to bring something to benefit the group, but there is just enough mystery about their characters that I look forward to more being revealed in future books.

Is this a "guy's book"?  The main character is ex-special forces military.  There’s plenty of action and suspense to keep anyone’s interest.  This books is definitely one of those, “just one more chapter and then I’ll go to bed” type books.  Yes, this is a book that any guy would enjoy reading.

Mr. Dickson was gracious enough to answer a few of our questions in a quest to get to know him a little better:

What is your favorite bible verse and why?

It’s hard to narrow it down to one, but I guess if I had to pick it would be “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1) I love that, because it comes right after Paul’s famous description in Romans 7 of his spiritual struggle against evil, and his confession that sometimes evil gets the upper hand. I’m comforted by that confession, because if even a spiritual giant like Saint Paul the Apostle finds that “when I want to do good, evil is right there with me,” then it means my own ongoing failure to be the kind of man God wants me to be is probably okay. Not okay in the sense that I should be comfortable with it, of course, but okay in the sense that it will all work out well in the end. Romans 8:1 means God isn’t sitting up in heaven judging my every move. God knows I have sinned, still sin, and will sin, and he has loves me and has mercy on me anyway.

What has been the most important thing you hope your readers will get from your books and why?

The first goal of every novel ought to be to entertain. If a story isn’t interesting at the very least, and hopefully a lot of fun to read on top of that, then nobody’s going to care about anything else the book might have to offer.

Besides writing, what are some of your favorite hobbies? 

I love boats and boating. Every kind of boat from a canoe to the Queen Mary appeals to me. I love boat designs for artistic reasons, and I love learning how they function. I own two or three boats at any given moment. I have a small library of books about things like boat design, boat history, and cruising on boats. I love how it feels to sleep on a boat. I love waking up in the morning at anchor in some secluded cove. I love that boats can take me all the way around the world if I choose to go, which of course you can’t do in a car. I love the fact that you don’t have to follow roads in a boat; you can steer in any direction you like. I love the fact that it’s so easy to get off by yourself in a boat. I love the instant contact with nature you get in a boat. And I love the sense of adventure I feel whenever I set out in a boat.

What advice would you give to a beginning writer?

The best advice is to write a lot. If you’re not writing, you’re not learning to write; you’re just fooling yourself. The next best advice is to find someone whose opinion you respect, and who knows a good book when they read it, and who you believe will be brutally honest, and then let them read your writing and listen to what they think. Be ready to change anything and everything. Never be defensive. Welcome negative critiques. They person who points out what is wrong with your work is the one who’s helping you get better; not the one who’s telling you how wonderful it is.

Favorite memory from childhood?

When I was ten, my parents took my little brother and me on a one month road trip. We covered most of the western States, from Texas to California, up to Washington, over to Montana, and then down again. The year after that we did the same thing, except we went east. Those two trips opened my eyes to how big and exciting the world is.

Favorite comfort food?

Pecan pie. No, wait. Peanut butter on Ritz crackers. No, wait. Pulled pork barbeque. No, wait. Cheese enchiladas. No, wait….

As the police continue their investigation into the stalker, they discover that he is a childhood friend of Pam, Jack’s wife. As the hunt continues, Pam takes her girls away to visit her folks to keep them out of the danger. While there, though, she runs smack into her stalker, Granger Meade. Granger kidnaps Pam and starts on a cross-country journey to “make the life he never had” with Pam by his side. Meanwhile, Jack has discovered evidence of the church elders skimming money from the tithes and offerings, something that Evan had found out too. Evan, we find out, has given up on himself and God and is on his way to end his failures to his wife and to his church. Jack is notified that his wife has been kidnapped, so he heads out to stop Granger from destroying all he loves. Where does Granger take Pam? Does he convince her to leave Jack and the kids behind and be with him? Will Jack find Pam and stop Granger before it’s too late? Where is Evan and what does he do with his life? Great questions and even better answers when you BUY THE BOOK!

 This book grabs you from the start and it never lets go. From Granger breaking into the house, the investigation into the missing pastor, the discovery of missing funds at the church, the cross-country chase to the explosive ending. You never have a chance to breathe with all of the excitement and you definitely will never want to put this book down. All along the way, too, we get to see how the characters rely on Him to help them in all of their times of trials and tribulations. We get to see faith in action of Pam and Jack. We get to see the feeling of hopelessness addressed by the “lost” pastor and we get to see the acceptance of God’s love in Granger.

 Is this a "guy's book"? This has the earmarks of a great guys book. The pace is quick and refreshing, the twists and turns keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what more could happen. Any guy should pick up this book and be thoroughly entertained by the time the action is all over.

 Creston took a few minutes of his time and answered some interview questions for me in a chance to let us see a little about who he is and why he does what he does:

 What is your favorite bible verse and why?
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Jesus Christ now lives in me. The life I live in the flesh, I live with faith in the Son of God, who loved me and delivered himself up for me” (Galatians 2:20). It is so tempting to try to live this life in our own strength. This verse reminds me to die to that concept, to remember that when Christ went to the cross, I was there with him, dying to my old self and my old ways. Now, I live, not with faith in Creston, but with faith in Christ. It’s not me who’s living this life…it’s Him in me, the hope of glory.

What has been the most important thing you hope your readers will get from your books and why?
 In each book there has been a different “takeaway” factor for the reader. It’s not that I go into each book with a plan to get the reader to think a certain way. Each book simply reflects where I am in life, what I’m going through personally, mentally, spiritually, etc. I want readers to be thoroughly engrossed with my books and to have a lot of fun turning the pages, dying to find out what happens next! I also want them to be challenged to think about some of the major issues in each book and to really contemplate how those characters and stories might actually impact the way they live their lives on a day-to-day basis. But I don’t think about that as I’m writing…I think about writing thrilling stories that play like fantastic movies in the reader’s mind.

 Besides writing, what are some of your favorite hobbies?
 We have a very close-knit family, so much of my time is spent with them, helping coach baseball, watching drama productions, teaching them to drive, visiting them at college, going to their events, and just hanging out as often as possible. I also love painting, reading, watching sports, photography, going on dates with my wife, watching movies, cooking a little bit, and being with friends.

 What advice would you give to a beginning writer?
 There is so much to learn about the craft of writing fiction. To do it well, there is a whole lot to understand before you really get serious about writing a manuscript. Things like ‘point of view,’ ‘telling not showing,’ pacing, premise, and other things really need to be understood if the author is going to write a fine book. I suggest reading all you can about the craft of writing fiction. There are some tremendous books out there by the likes of Donald Maass, Noah Lukeman, Stephen King, James Scott Bell, Penelope Stokes and others that will really help the beginning writer.

 Favorite memory from childhood?
Going across the street to the local pharmacy in our small Ohio town to buy candy and baseball cards. Being around my dad’s furniture store and hanging with friends/family.

 Favorite comfort food?
 Cheese and pretzels. A fine cup of coffee. (Not together.)

Ever since 2010 when Dr. Mabry released his first novel in the “Prescription for Trouble” series, I have waited patiently for each title to make its way to the bookstore so that I could read the newest novel all in one day.  At the end of the series, I was saddened, not sure what I was going to be reading next.  And then, “Stress Test” was released.  Nothing like a 5 hour car ride to put a dent in any great novel.

Dr. Matt Newman has finally taken the step to close one door in his medical profession and open a new one in the local teaching hospital.  His future plans include a more relaxed working routine and more time with his fiancé.  That is, until he is kidnapped from the hospital parking garage.  Keeping his wits about him, he is able to escape from his kidnappers.  Unfortunately, he ends up waking up in the very same hospital he’s set to begin work in.  Due to a head injury during the kidnapping, when he is brought into the hospital, no one knows who he is.  It doesn’t take long, though, for the police to track him down as his identification was found with a dead woman’s body.  Without being able to present good evidence of what happened to him during the kidnapping, Matt is forced to hire Sandra Murray to help him defend his case.  After turning to his fiancé, he finds that she is trying to distance herself from Matt and his troubles due to her job in the District Attorney’s office.  Matt and Sandra follow down every lead they can find in order to prove his innocence.  Who would want to kidnap Matt and for what reason?  Will Matt get to keep his job or will he be fired before he even starts due to his role in the murder?  Do they find the evidence they need to prove Matt didn’t commit this murder or will the District Attorney put him away for a long time?  Get in your car, drive to your local bookstore and BUY THE BOOK!

From the moment that Matt is kidnapped, this book takes you on an adrenaline-laced ride.  Dr. Mabry has put together another great story that blends a subtle medical thriller with an intense whodunit.  His interactions that he creates between the characters make them come alive.  He is not only impressive with all of his medical knowledge and know-how, but he also shows how he can weave a storyline through all of the chaos that is created.  His storytelling is so genuine and smooth, to the point that I hate when I finally read the last word of the novel.

Is this a "guy's book"?  With the main character being a strong male, this is definitely a story that any man would enjoy reading.  Dr. Mabry does has a touch of romance, but not enough to keep this from being read and enjoyed by any man.  There’s a kidnapping, an escape, an ambush and more.  Who wouldn’t want to read a story like that?

In addition to the practice of medicine, my past includes a stint overseas in the US Air Force, several periods as an interim music minister, and an all-too-brief experience as a semi-pro baseball player. In other words, there’s more to me than “M.D.” covers. Let me share a little about myself.   I’ve been a Christian for six decades. For almost forty years, I was a Deacon in the Baptist church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and singing in the choir. After a recent move across the city, I’m proud to be a member of the Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, Texas, where I get to hear Dr. Chuck Swindoll preach regularly.  As for hobbies, I Primarily enjoy golfing, usually once a week with the same golf partner for the past ten years or so. Avenged by Janice Cantore

This is the third book in the "Pacific Coast Justice" series by Janice Cantore.  I have already read the first book, "Accused" and already read and reviewed "Abducted", so grabbing this one from the store shelf was a no-brainer.  If you haven’t read the other books in this series, go buy them now.  Go read my other reviews too so that you can see what a great reviewer I am J

Carly is preparing for the upcoming Burke trial where she will be the star witness.  It’s because of her involvement that several corrupt officials have gone to jail, and hopefully Burke will be put away for murder.  Nick is now the sargent of the homicide division, so they are juggling their work life, personal life and spiritual life.  The atmosphere in their town of Las Playas is bristling with tension as environmental protestors have setup camp in Sandy Park to protest changes to the marina and new development along the shoreline.  As if that isn’t enough, a gang war appears imminent between the two biggest gang rivals in town.  On a chance encounter with the head of one of the gangs, Carly’s partner is sidelined with a knee injury.  Carly is offered a job with a Federal Taskforce, so maybe Joe getting hurt is a sign.  A recent parolee arrives on the scene along with a woman blogger who seem bent on discrediting Carly and her credibility.  Then there’s a bomb at the local coffee shop, a protestor killed along the water, Carly is involved in another shooting and Nick is kidnapped!  Do any of these things tie together?  Will Carly be thrown off the force for complaints lodged against her?  Where is Nick and will she find in him time?  Yep, you guess it….. Go buy the book!

Since this is the last book in the series, it’s rather bittersweet.  Carly and Nick have been such great role-models for not only top notch police officers, but as a great example of what communication should look like in a marriage.  These two characters provide time for themselves together, separately and for Christ.  I read a review that said her characters aren’t very believable because they appear to always be on a honeymoon.  Well, if we turn it ALL over to Him, I believe that that is exactly what He wants us to look like as we go through out day to day lives.  The constant theme I found through this book is that we must always remember the He is in charge and that if we turn it over to Him we have a better outlook on our lives.  Will we have a perfect life to lead with no struggles or problems or cares?  Not a chance.  But we will know that He is there to protect us and to care for us through all those times.

Is this a "guy's book"?  Most certainly!  This book again is littered with police chases, bomb threats, gang killings and more.  This was a very fitting end to two great characters that Ms. Cantore has been gracious enough to introduce us all to.

Interview with Janice Cantore:

What is your favorite bible verse and why? 

This changes depending on what I am going through. Right now it is Jer 29:11-13 I need to remember that God has good plans for my life, nothing is haphazard.

What has been the most important thing you hope your readers will get from your books and why?

That there is hope in life. No one is here by accident. We have a Creator and a Savior who are concerned about us and no matter what mistakes we make God can and does redeem. 

Besides writing, what are some of your favorite hobbies? 

Reading, hiking with my dogs, cross stitch and crocheting. (And a bad habit of wasting time playing computer games.)

What advice would you give to a beginning writer?

Be sure it's your calling even if you never make a penny at it. Be prepared to learn, to listen to criticism, and to never stop learning.

Favorite memory from childhood?

We always had Thanksgiving dinner at our house. The rest of the the family would start arriving around noon. Some of my best memories are of the wonderful smells of my mother's cooking, of aunts and uncles arriving with flowers and then everyone gathering around a huge table eating wonderful food and hearing many conversations going on everywhere. 

Favorite comfort food?

Anything Italian. Lasagna, ravioli, smothered in cheese with thick, crunchy toasted French bread.

A retired Long Beach California police officer of 22 years (16 in uniform and 6 as a non-career officer), Janice Cantore worked a variety of assignments, patrol, administration, juvenile investigations and training. If you haven’t heard of this amazing new author, you are definitely missing out.  This is the second book in the “Alaskan Courage” series, with “Submerged” being the first book in the series.  Her first book, “Submerged” actually garnered the First Place award in the first “Book of the Year” contest held by the Book Club Network.  That sets the bar very high for this sequel, but she more than rises to the task.  This book was provided to me by the publisher in the hopes that I would provide them and you with an honest review.  It makes it very easy to do that when the book is written as well as this one is.  I would recommend that you include “Submerged” to your list of “Need To Be Read” books before you start on this story.  Although this can be read alone, it’s better to know the backstory to these characters before you start with “Shattered”.

                                                                                                                                                                 

There’s nothing better in this small town Sheriff’s department then to have an open and shut murder case.  Sheriff Slidell is up for re-election and having an open murder case would be the end of his campaign.  Throw in a town full of spectators for the latest leg of the Circuit and the pressure is on.  It always helps to have the alleged murderer caught in the act.  Or so they think.  Piper McKenna, though, isn’t as acceptable to the fact that her brother is a murderer.  With the history between Piper and Deputy Sheriff Landon Grainger, Piper is sure that her brother will be out soon, it must be all a misunderstanding.  As Landon tries to investigate, he is blocked at every path by Sheriff Slidell.  Unable to get any further due to the sheriff’s interference, Landon takes a leave of absence.  During his time, Landon teams up with Piper to form their own investigation and get to the bottom of the murder.  As the McKenna family circles the wagons in order to save their own, older brother Gage is introduced to Darcy, a reporter looking to write her own story on the murder.  Darcy agrees to use her reporter influence to track down the truth in exchange for the scoop on the story.  The trail leads throughout the Alaska slopes as they track down the dead girl’s background.  Will they be able to find out who the real killer is before it’s too late?  What will become of this pairing between Landon and Piper? Can this family come together an save their brother and keep him out of jail?  Great questions, now go BUY THE BOOK!!!!

I don’t like comparing authors to each other as each and every author has their own voice and does a great job of using it to tell us great stories.  This time, though, I just have to draw a connection between this great new author and one of my most favorite authors, Dee Henderson.  Dani creates an ensemble of cast members that all have integral and important roles in each other’s life.  Dani weaves the storyline through the different characters and their interactions with each other in a way that makes you interested in each and every one of them.  I remember reading the O’Malley series by Dee Henderson and always felt the same way.  I can’t wait to read the stories that Dani has ready to be published about the other McKenna family members.  This series will be a treat for anyone reading it.

 

Is this a "man's book"?  The storyline has murder, intrigue and a traipse across beautiful Alaska.  Even with a little bit of romance thrown in, this is a must read for any guy that I know.  We could learn a lot from the characterization that Dani uses in describing the men in this story, and especially in their relationship with Him.

I had a chance to chat with Dani a bit and get some additional insight into her.  Here are her responses to my questions:

What is your favorite bible verse and why?

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV.  I love it because it explains why death is so hard for us to deal with. It is because God has set eternity into our hearts. We know He has created us for more than this life, this world.

What has been the most important thing you hope your readers will get from your books and why?

That we find wholeness and fulfillment in Christ alone. Only He can take what is broken and make it whole again. Only He can bring the healing we need when we are hurting. Only He can bring us the grace we need to live each day.

Besides writing, what are some of your favorite hobbies? 

I love hiking, spending time at the beach, rock climbing, traveling and reading.

What advice would you give to a beginning writer?

Keep writing. It very easy to become discouraged. Writing can be a solitary endeavor and there are many obstacles along the path to publication, but if God has placed the love of story on your heart then write for Him. You just may be amazed what He does with it J

Favorite memory from childhood?

Sunday afternoons with my mom. We would grab lunch at one of our favorite restaurants and then we’d go for a long drive. I loved spending that time with her, loved the time to daydream, and loved visiting fun little towns along the way.

Favorite comfort food?

Dark chocolate in any form J
